Melodious Górecki

Melodious Górecki

21 January 2013

„Trzy utwory w dawnym stylu” (Three Pieces in Old Style) for string orchestra composed by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki (1933 – 2010) were created as a response to a humorous and friendly „complaint” by Tadeusz Chlewski (at the time director of Polish Music Publishing House) that referred to a lack of melody in composers pieces. Composed in 1963, in less than a month, they are now the composer’s most popular and most frequently performed pieces. The reference to the style of past epochs is shown not only in the title but also in the music by using a melody characteristic to Renaissance compositions. It is interesting, that the composer in the outermost pieces uses only seven "white keys". The middle piece is a dance that raises associations with a folk dance.  The third piece refers an anonymous Old-Polish song from the middle of 16th century entitled „Pieśń o weselu Króla Zygmunta Wtórego” (The song of King Zygmunt Wtory’s wedding). In "Trzy utwory" (Three songs) one can clearly hear Górecki's departure from the experimental avant-garde towards moderation of musical means and folk simplicity. The composition is also an harbinger of a new style which in later years became a distinctive feature of the composer recognized throughout the world.
